Meet the Gardeners

Every Wednesday from 3pm we gather for a social meetup.

This is the perfect time to come along and find out about the garden and look around or join up or just have a free cuppa and a chat.

Don't worry if the gate is closed, just wave and someone will let you in.

Special Covid19 restrictions

It seems the worst of the pandemic is behind us, all restrictions have been lifted and life returns to normal.

All fundraising events return to normal.

All members are now welcome to attend the garden anytime they like. Non members and visitors are encouraged to attend on Wednesday afternoons to have a look around and ask questions, have a cup of tea or coffee and join up if it suits.

Thank you and stay healthy.

The Benefits of a Community Garden

20200928_153813.jpg

We hope that the garden will give people a sense of achievement and belonging and will provide opportunities to make a difference in the community. We want members to feel proud of the garden at Labrador.

Garden Aim

  •   Establish a sustainable, non-profit, community garden in Labrador which is driven by the local community.

  •   Open the garden to members of all ages and cultures on the Gold Coast and build their knowledge through workshops.

  •   Encourage people to grow their own fruit and vegetables, herbs, and flowers.

  •   Embrace and connect the community with common passion for growing their own food using organic gardening principles.

  •   Build the garden in a place which allows an opportunity for the whole local community to be involved.

  •   Educate the members on the benefits of being healthy and active while gardening.

Get Involved in the Volunteer Program.

Here's your opportunity to be a valuable part of the community by volunteering to help with the events.

The Labrador community garden has several regular volunteer events and we are always looking for active members to show up and help with the setting up and running of these events. We cant do this without help.

Part of your obligations as a member is to provide just

2 hours of your time per month to assist in any of the activities including working bees and fundraising events.

We hold workshops where people can learn about all kinds of subjects related to gardening such as composting, propagation, worm-farms, pest control, seed raising etc.

Once a month a Working Bee to maintain the grounds.

Once a month Car Boot Sale in the adjacent park.

Every few weeks a Sausage Sizzle at Bunnings,

and various other community type events.

How we raise funds.

Currently there are two primary events that we use to raise the essential funds that we need to keep the garden running.

There is the regular "Sausage Sizzle" held in the local (Arundle) Bunnings carpark approximately once a month. All the equipment including BBQs and marquis are provided by Bunnings, and the Garden provides the sausages, onions, bread and sauces etc. All we need are active members to cook and serve for 2 hours on a Sunday.

The second regular event is the "Car Boot Sale" held by the Tigers Footy Club in the adjacent park right next to the Garden. We have 5 marquis and we sell plants, produce, clothing, shoes, books, and various bric-a-brac that has been donated to the garden by thoughtful locals.

This sale is held once a month on a Sunday morning and is a great way to get outside and meet some of the locals.

The Labrador community garden is a "not for profit" community effort.

The membership fees paid are very low and do not cover much of the expenses in running the garden including maintenance and insurances.

Garden policy

The produce you grow is yours to keep, you may share excess if you wish and others will probably offer you some of their excess but this is not a requirement, however you are not permitted to take anything from any other bed without prior permission from the bed holder. This type of offense  may result in your losing your membership privileges.

There are video cameras set up within the garden for security purposes and anybody found stealing from another members plot will be dealt with accordingly.

There is a plot dedicated to herbs in the middle of the garden, these herbs may be freely taken by any member, please be reasonable about the amount you take as we all want a little bit too. Make sure you are familiar with the herb garden which (other than your own plot) is the only plot that you can freely take from.

Each member is responsible for the watering, weeding, planting and all other maintenance of their allocated plot.

Safety guidelines

All visitors and members must sign-in the attendance book upon arrival, and mark the time of arrival and also mark the time of departure upon leaving. This is an insurance requirement. Any members neglecting to sign in will be reminded of their responsibilities and continued disregard of this requirement may result in loss of membership privileges.

Members and guests must wear enclosed footwear during their visit to the garden. This is an insurance requirement to ensure the general safety of all who visit. There are sharp objects and tripping/stubbing hazards and enclosed footwear reduces the risks.

It is recommended that members lock the gate behind them whilst inside to reduce the risk of unwanted persons entering uninvited.
